Do You “e-Read”?

Kindle Paperwhite 3G

I love to read. I prefer a book to a movie (most times). Call me old-fashioned if you like, but there’s just something about spending quiet time and letting your imagination flesh out the image of the author’s words. I understand if you’re a millennial reading this, you may think that I’m crazy (I know my kids do), but I think this stems from being encouraged to read as I was growing up. The fact that there weren’t as many distractions back then likely helped cultivate my love for reading as well.

What do I read? The answer to that is second, probably, only to “What kind of music do you like?”. My book choice depends on what I feel like diving into when I’m choosing my next book. I’ve always been a fan of fantasy novels, so if I had to pick a primary genre, that would be it! I also love a good suspense story, or a thriller or horror, and then at other times I prefer to read something non-fiction – a biography, self-help/ improvement, etc. This brings me to the reason for this post…it seems to be a bone of contention with avid readers:

Do you prefer eReaders or traditional books? I’d love to hear your side of the “argument” in the Comments section… Continue reading

Believing In Your Strategy

Wow! The last couple of days have been a whirlwind as the BlueStar Canada Sales, Marketing & Management team met offsite for two main reasons:

  • to celebrate the success in 2015 (with many thanks to our loyal customers and manufacturer partners)
  • set the direction for 2016 and make sure everyone has “bought in”

Let’s face it, the market right now is in a very slow growth mode, but is our team worried? The answer to that is a resounding “NO“! I have never had the pleasure of working for a team that is so focused on helping our partners succeed! Everyone has bought in to a solid strategy for this year, and I believe the major difference from what I have seen elsewhere is that this isn’t just “Managment Strategy”. I believe for companies to have complete buy-in, collaboration is very important so that there is a feeling of ownership with the plan. Our management team has definitely accomplished this, and I can honestly say that in my 22 years in IT distribution, I have never felt so pumped, and even more importantly, in control of where we can go this year! Other companies could take a page out of this book when looking at strategizing and planning for the future.

DIY Meals

So after a great (but very long) day of strategy and planning discussions, we sat down to a superb three-course meal…lo and behold, though, when my sirloin arrived I had to actually cook it myself! Awesome! That stone slab is granite and very hot! Quite the experience 🙂

Hump-Day Ramblings

While I definitely didn’t walk through a space/ time tear today, I had to take a few moments away from a very busy work day to decompress a little. Today is a very busy day getting loose ends tied up with customers before a short trip to Montreal for our Sales Kickoff event. This is an event we all look forward to each year, as it always seems to be in a new location that somehow outdoes the previous year’s spot! That said, I despise having things not done, so today I don’t leave until all my customers are taken care of.

There are a few other things that have popped into my teeny-tiny brain today as well…no rhyme nor reason that I can think of… Continue reading

Semi-Stormy Tuesday

20160112_195345561_iOSThis has been my view for the day while working from my home office. This is as clear as it has been since I sat down at around 7AM. South-western Ontario has been getting on-again/ off-again snow squalls. I suppose we shouldn’t complain too loudly since it’s almost mid-January and we have had the warmest winter to date that I can remember! For me it wasn’t a question of a green or white Christmas last month; it was more a question of whether I could get a bike ride in!

Retro Gaming Time!

I’m a gamer. There. I said it. For as long as I remember, I’ve had a current computer growing up, and I always loved the old-style adventure games that Sierra put out, like King’s Quest and Space Quest, but I must say, if I had to pick a favourite from that era, it has to be the Leisure Suit Larry series.

When I received my email this weekend with the promos, these immediately caught my eye!

What’s this?? I can get THREE Leisure Suit games for $6.57USD?? SOLD!

If you never played a Leisure Suit Larry game while growing up (or growing older) and have no idea what it’s about, Wikipedia says it best in the opening article statement:

The games follow Larry Laffer, a balding, double entendre-speaking, leisure suit-wearing man in his 40s. The game play revolves around him attempting, usually unsuccessfully, to seduce attractive women.

I urge you to give at least the first one a try – you’ll have plenty of PG/ AA laughs along the way, and if anyone can repackage the oldies properly, it’s the team at! The promo is until 11:59pm EST Monday, January 11th.
